Stephen Hough is a new breed of musician. Not only is he an incredible player, he is also a scholar, a composer, a writer, a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship (“genius grant”), and a champion of lesser-known repertoire from the 19th century and today. Hough first appeared on the international music scene after winning the coveted Naumburg competition in 1983; he has appeared with the world’s leading orchestras at major concert halls and festivals ever since. With this program, audiences will experience a broad overview of Hough’s musical palette, from Bach through 19th-century France and into modern America.
Bach/Cortot: Toccata & Fugue in D Minor
Fauré: Nocturne No. 6 in D-flat Major; Barcarolle No. 5 in F-sharp Minor
Franck: Prelude, Chorale and Fugue
Copland: Piano Variations
Chopin: Nocturne in B Major, Op. 62, No. 1; Sonata in B Minor, Op. 58
“[Hough’s] refined brand of virtuosity was expresed in flawless technique, introspective interpretations, and an imaginative choice of repertoire. … The musical language was rigorous, the performance masterly.”
