Equally at home playing intimate chamber music concerts, delving into archives to uncover forgotten musical gems, or performing alongside the world’s most renowned orchestras and conductors, Steven Isserlis ’80 is a cellist whose passion for music transcends conventional boundaries. In this recital, the Oberlin alumnus presents some of his personal favorites, including Schumann’s later music, a repertoire the cellist believes is underappreciated. “The more one knows it,” Isserlis says, “the more one gets to love it.” This recital offers a glimpse into the musical world of a unique and thoughtful musician.
Schumann: Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70
Schumann (arr. Isserlis): Violin Sonata No. 3 in A Minor, WoO 27
Mendelssohn: Variations Concertantes for Cello and Piano in D Major, Op. 17
Britten: Sonata for Cello and Piano in C Major, Op. 65
Poulenc: Sonata for Cello and Piano
“The music world—and music itself—is infinitely richer for the presence of Steven Isserlis.”
