Academic Departments and Programs

Oberlin's community of committed faculty, staff and students are united by a common desire to learn, explore, share, and lead, which is supported by a strong liberal arts program.

Among the varied departments and majors are astrophysics, astronomy, African American studies, Chinese language and culture, politics, East Asian studies, environmental studies, music theory, geology, and neuroscience. Oberlin also allows for independent study so you can explore a subject in more depth. Most departments and majors are interdisciplinary in nature, which encourages collaboration and allows you to expand disciplinary boundaries.

Our liberal arts program is marked by rigor, creativity, and social engagement. Check out our areas of study and learn more by referring to the online course catalog.

Students who wish to pursue topics outside of traditional courses, an important alternative is available in the Experimental College (ExCo). Founded in 1968, ExCo is a student-run organization that sponsors courses (for limited academic credit) taught Oberlin faculty, students, administrators, and residents. Rock climbing, performance swing, astrology, 16-mm film production, jump rope, bike mechanics, henna body art… you name it, ExCo may have a class about it.
