A brick house, immediately south of Baldwin Cottage, was purchased by the College from Mr. I.A. Webster in 1886. From 1887 to 1911 it was rented privately for boarding house purposes. In 1911 it was remodeled to meet the office needs of the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds and of the Principal of the Academy. During the intervening years it served as the headquarters of the College Y.W.C.A. and for office purposes for the College Annual. Since 1934 its use has been largely for laboratory purposes in connection with the Kindergarten-Primary major of the department of Education. This house was built in 1870 by Professor G.N. Allen, who served the College for more than thirty years as Professor of Sacred Music, Professor of Natural Science, Professor of Geology, and Principal of the Preparatory Department. It is one of the oldest structures in use for college purposes at the present time. [Allen House was torn down in 1938.]
