RG 9/6 - Physical Education Department
Scope and Content

The records from the Physical Education Department date from 1880 to 2004 and document the development of physical training for men and women at Oberlin College.  Records from the men's department comprise the bulk of this record group (Subgroups I-V) and include correspondence of the Directors of Athletics; information on Oberlin's philosophy of athletics and how it has evolved; curricular materials from the tenures of C.W. Savage, W.R. Morrison, J.H. Nichols, and L.K. Butler; and files of correspondence and minutes pertaining to the Ohio Athletic Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  Files related to intercollegiate and intramural athletics include correspondence about events, team information, coaching notes, and results of events.

Files of the Department of Physical Education for Women trace that program from the mid-1880's through the early 1980's.  (While the Women's Department as a separate entity no longer existed after 1970, women faculty members continued to hold their own staff meetings and develop programs distinctly for women.)  The Women's Department had three different names before the 1970 merger with the Men's Department:  Department of Physical Training for Women (1887-1903), Teachers Course in Physical Education for Women (1904-1936), and the Department of Physical Education for Women (1955-1970).  These records include early physical evaluation charts, handbooks and curricular materials developed by Delphine Hanna amongst others, individual files for alumni of the Department from 1886-1963, correspondence, information on facilities, and minutes from Women's Department staff meetings.

For both departments, a large amount of publicity material and extensive photograph file exist.  Publicity from the two departments had been previously interfiled and was thus left that way; photographs, however, are separated into two groups.  Department of Physical Education records are arranged in the following subgroups and series:
