RG 30/23 - Herbert A. Miller (1875-1951)
Scope and Content

The papers of Herbert A. Miller document his interest in and relations with Eastern Europe and—to a lesser degree—China. Miller’s academic investigations in Eastern Europe are evidenced in the collection’s published writings and maps. His role in the formation of the Mid-European Union is well documented by correspondence, printed material, and several unpublished manuscripts.

Series Descriptions

Series 1. Correspondence, 1911-26, 1949, 1979, n.d.

The correspondence series contains letters relating to the formation of the Mid-European Union. Also included are letters sent between Miller, Rabbi Louis Woolsey, and Ernest Ludwig regarding the case of Alice Masaryk, who was investigated by Austria-Hungry for treason in 1916. In addition, there is miscellaneous correspondence on a variety of subjects, both personal and professional, 1911-1979. This series contains some letters not composed by Miller.

Series 2. Newspaper Clippings, 1918, 1924, 1951

This series contains a copy of a New York Times story, 29 December 1918, regarding Czechoslovakia after the First World War. Also included are several copies of newspaper articles concerning Miller’s work, 1924, 1951.

Series 3. Maps, 1918, n.d.

The maps series contains a non-English color map of Bohemia, Moravia, Slovakia and surrounding regions as well as three copies of a map of Miller’s creation titled “The New Map of Europe: Approximate Boundaries of Peoples,” 1918.

Series 4. Printed Material, n.d.

This series contains leaflets concerning the Mid-European Union and a postcard featuring a photograph of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of Mid-European Nations. In addition, two short documents written in foreign languages are included.

Series 5. Speeches, 1911, n.d.

The speeches series contains handwritten copies of three speeches presumably given by Miller. Two of the speeches note they were translated by Chas. H. Hauskovsky. The titles of the speeches are noted in the inventory.

Series 6. Writings

Subseries 1. Mid-European Union, 1918, n.d.

This subseries contains a history of the formation of the Mid-European Union, the “Declaration of Common Aims of the Independent Mid-European Union,” several typescript drafts—including handwritten corrections—of Susan Fidélité Hinman’s “A New World-Task: Organizing democracy,” and an untitled article by Hinman announcing the exhibit of souvenirs from the signing of declarations by the Mid-European Union.

Subseries 2. Published Writings, 1918-21, 1931

The published writings contain several articles written by Miller concerning his studies in Eastern Europe and China. A full listing of the articles is included in the inventory.

Subseries 3. Unpublished Manuscripts, n.d.

This subseries contains two unpublished manuscripts, the first titled “Notes on the Szechoslovaks,” and the second, by Susan Fidélité Hinman, titled “Impressions of the First National Convention of the Poles of America.”
