RG 30/222 - Frances Walker-Slocum (1924- )
Scope and Content

The papers of Frances Walker Slocum contain biographical material, correspondence, performance and recital programs, and writings relating to her performances. The most significant materials in the papers are the performance programs (series two). Dating between the 1940s and 1990s, these files document Slocum's performances at Oberlin College and at venues across the United States and Europe. The programs detail the wide range of pieces of music Walker played, location of the concerts, and who she performed with (if at all). Newsclippings of reviews (1950s-1990s), located in series four (4), are noteworthy in that they report on the critical acclaim she received for her perfomances. The reviews document the highs and lows of Walker's performances, often praising her for her technique and selection of music. An undated Washington Post review called her performance at the Terrace Theater "the most beautiful concert of the season" and giving "a gorgeous program of shamefully neglected American music." Despite the rich record detailing her performances, there are weakness in the collection. Notably absent are additional correspondence and teaching files in which would document fully Slocum's musical and academic career.
