| Scope and Content |
| This small collection of Kirke and Mary Cowdery consists of materials that document the study and teaching of the French language by both persons. Included are essays, poems, notes and song lyrics in French, Italian, and English that seem to have been used as class materials in the Cowdery’s teaching. Also included are photographs of Mary Cowdery and an article about World War I that Kirke Cowdery wrote for the Oberlin Alumni Magazine. |

Series I. Correspondence, 1893-1894 (1f) Contains two letters from mother to Mary T. Cowdery, 1893, 1894, concerning family and community matters. Series II. Songs, 1921, n.d. (1f) Consists of miscellaneous song lyrics and Oberlin College Conservatory programs of Kirke L. Cowdery (in French and Italian). Some English translations are included. Series III. Writings, 1928, n.d. (3f) Consists of French essays, poems, literature (such as excerpts from Rabelais’s “Gargantua”) and class notes of Kirke and Mary Cowdery, as well as a 1928 Oberlin Alumni Magazine article by Kirke Cowdery. Series IV. Photographs, c. 1890, n.d. (1f) Contains three photographs of Mary Cowdery, two of which are identical and taken circa 1890 or before, and the third seems to be a portrait from her youth, n.d. |

| The Oberlin College Library, Department of Special Collections, holds writings by Kirke and Mary T. Cowdery. These include the three essays that comprise Mary T. Cowdery's 1913 Oberlin College Master's thesis, "Jean Jacques Rousseau and the historical influence of his ideas in France from 1750 to 1815...," "Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux," and "Rousseau's influence upon French literature." Special Collections also holds a reprint of Kirke L. Cowdery's "A Note on Chateaubriand," Modern Language Journal vol. 13, no. 6 (March 1929). |
