"Drakola Closed After 82 Years,": an article appearing in a publication
of the South Dakota Conference of the United Church of Christ, Huron, South Dakota,
mentioning the Oberlin Settlement. In 1882, eight families took land near Lake
Thompson (near DeSmet) in Dakota Territory. These settlers became known as the "Oberlin
Settlement." Most of the charter members of the Drakola
Congregational Church (1884) came from those families. Of the
15 charter members, 10
had been members
of the First Congregational Church of Oberlin, Ohio. The Drakola
Church was named after Rev. George W. Drake (AB '43; Sem. '46).
