Munger, Ione Theresa (Mrs. Hanna), [ca. 1917?]

" A Chapter of Reminiscences" by Mrs. Ione T. Hanna, [n.d., c. 1917?], O.C. 1859, in which she describes Oberlin, O.C., a female student's life, faculty members, the Wellington Rescue and other events of the late 1850`s. Also mentioned are Penn Yan, N.Y.; hearing Sally Holley, Baptist revivalists, Abby Kelley Foster, Frederick Douglass, John B. Gough and John G. Saxe; temperance and temperance songs, Amelia Bloomer, underground railroad; and the Shaker community at Jerusalem, N.Y. There are also two other MSS, one by Mrs. Hanna relating the authorship of the song, "My Ain Countree," and the other, by Orett L. Munger, about seeing President Lincoln and General Grant. These MSS were found among the miscellaneous material in the Bohn files, Accession #28.

Carbon copy of a letter from Danforth B. Nichols (AB 1839) to Sarah Cowles Little, July 24, 1900, in which Nichols relates his memories of Mrs. Sarah Little's mother and father; (typescript, 2 1/2 pp.)

Reinhardt, Dorothy D. Richards, n.d.

Account (55 pp.) of life, 1900-08, in Inhambane, Mozambique, Africa, where her father, Erwin H. Richards (A.B. 1877) was a missionary. Dorothy Duncanson Richards was a 1919 graduate of the Kindergarten Training School. Includes correspondence of the archivist.

Robinson, Thomas H., c. 1904

Manuscript "Reminiscences of Charles Grandison Finney" primarily deals with recollections of Finney from the time that Robinson (A.B. 1850; A.M. 1860) was a student at Oberlin from 1845-50.

Wells, Margery (Steer), 1973

Information (17 pp.) relating to student life from letters written by Margery Wells (Mrs. James W. Steer), AB 1923. Of particular interest are descriptions of sociology professor Herbert A. Miller and his teaching methods, including trips to a black church, a Jewish synagogue (pp. 11-12) and other places outside the classroom. Gift of Mrs. Steer, June 1977.

Baldwin, Rosanna, ca. 1854-57

Essays written by Rosanna Baldwin (Mrs. Avery S. Walker; A.B. 1855, A.M. 1858) while a student at Oberlin College. Includes manuscript essays and typed transcriptions prepared by her grandson Eugene H. Walker in 1981.

Chaney, Ann Eliza, 1839

Essays by Ann Eliza (or Elisa) Chaney (d. October 6, 1839) who was enrolled in the preparatory department in the 1839-40 academic year. [Acc. 2001/94]

Ely, Catherine Beach, 1909-30 (2f)

"Manuscript Record of Excursions in Southern France," describes excursions taken by Catherine Beach Ely (Ph.B. 1894; A.M. 1904) around Cannes, France in 1909-10. One of the visits described was also used by Ely, a magazine writer, in an article about early aviation in France, "Unsophisticated Sport in Cannes Twenty Years Ago" (c. 1930). Also inserted in this volume were correspondence (1930, n.d.) and two photographic negatives of sheep, possibly used as illustrations for one of Ely's magazine articles. [acc. 2001/94]

Hume, Janice Ruth, 1982

Excerpt of an unpublished novel by Janice Ruth Hume, class of 1937. This is a fictional account of Ms. Hume's mother's experiences teaching at Fisk University, Nashville, while she herself was an Oberlin student. The mother's real name was Alice M. Powers Ruth, '10. Not to be used without written permission of author. Oberlin College Library holds A Professorial Romance, a novel by Janice Ruth Hume, 1983.

"Appreciations of Cora May Walton Sledge," compiled by Haroldine Searle McLellan. Bound typescript. Cora May, graduate of Oberlin College in 1915, served as a teacher and subsequently as principal of the Women's School of the American Mission in Fenchow, Shansi, China from 1918 to 1924.

Multiple drafts of the script for the play, "Days of Possibilities: Memories of Oberlin Student Life During the Viet Nam Era," which was written to be performed at Oberlin in November 1989 as part of a special alumni reunion and symposium exploring student life during the period 1964-71. Hudson, Samuel M. and Paul A. Levi, 1963/64

Photography of the Oberlin production of “Hello, Harry This Are Joe Throw Down Your Rifle and Come Here Please a Minute or A Grab-Bag Revue.” The music was by Paul A. Levi (OC ‘63) and Richard Swain (OC ‘64), and the book and lyrics were by Samuel M. Hudson (OC ‘64). Stage manager Richard M. Candee headed the production staff. Poetry and water-color album kept in Oberlin, 1835-46. Contains poetic compositions in one hand, accompanied by numerous brilliant, primitive water color drawings of architectural, floral, or morbid interest, all clearly of greater accomplishment than the poetry. (Auction catalog description). Includes correspondence relating to the acquisition of the item and a photocopy of the relevant chapter in Fletcher's History in which Thirza Pelton is mentioned.
