Justice's Marriage Form, 1869-1915

Copy of The Marriage Form Book to be Used by Justices of the Peace... (Boston, Mass.: Geo. W. Moody, 1869) formerly belonging to Prof. A. H. Currier. This volume includes notes on marriages performed in Massachusetts; St. Louis, Missouri; Oberlin, Ohio; and other towns in Ohio, from 1873 to 1915. Martin, Charles B., Certificates of Study in Germany, 1885-92

Certificates of credit for courses taken at Berlin University, in 1885-86 and 1888, by Oberlin Professor Charles B. Martin (A.B. 1876; A.M. 1880, D.B. 1881). Also found here is an 1892 letter from Kaiserlich Deutsches Archaologisches Institut. Written in German. [Acc. 2001/94]

Memorial Day: Programs of Chapel Services, 1892-94, 1918-19

Original printed programs of Decoration Day services held in Oberlin's Finney Chapel. These materials were housed in the library's Oberlin Room; they were transferred to the archives and placed in "Non-College Miscellany" before being moved into the Oberlin File.

"The Minerva Society," 1908

Annie Birkbeck Ford, corresponding Secretary, Woman's Library Club, New Harmony, Indiana, to Emilie Royce Comings, November 9, 1908 giving information about the Minerva Society of New Harmony which was known as the first women's library club in the United States. The club began in 1859. Included is information about the club's minutes. [Acc. 1986/6]

Oberlin Community: Ephemera, 1847-1951 (4f)

Seven folders include the following:

(a) Anti-Saloon League: Two service programs (1918) commemorating the silver anniversary of the founding of the Anti-Saloon League in 1893 in Oberlin, accompanied by a carbon copy of a note (1954) by Robert Fletcher explaining the League's origins and listing its founding members.

(b) Oberlin Automobile Club: (pamphlet, 1951) – see RG 30/2

(c) Oberlin Billiard War: Newspaper clippings (1878) from generally unidentified papers reporting upon efforts to stop billiard playing in Oberlin.

(d) Oberlin Citizens' Committee Report: Oberlin citizens' committee report upon meetings with the faculty regarding use of the chapel, March 23, 1847; evidence of citizen disagreement with some individual College personnel and especially an unnamed member of the Female Department. Received from Mrs. Sumner Day, 9693 Fernwood, Apt. 35, Olmstead Falls, November 11, 1983 after being left with the Alumni Association.

(e) Oberlin Community Centennial Committee: Records of the committee (1933). Eleven letters and two telegrams received in response to invitation to attend the celebration. Several are from descendants of Peter Pindar Pease.

Certificate (12 1/2" x 14 1/2", drymounted) making Peter P. Pease a life member in the American Missionary Association, 10/25/1853. Also in the same box, deed of land [143 East College?] from Pease to Nathaniel Gerrish, 1837.

Shipherd, John J., 1830-32

Photocopies of the pages from the records book of the Presbyterian Church in Elyria [now the First Congregational Church] in which Shipherd wrote while he was the minister, 1830-32. Mrs. Richard J. Bergman, 313 Georgia Avenue, Elyria, permitted us to make these copies, 10/30/1975. See Shipherd Papers, 30/83.

Teaching Certificates, 1856-57

Two teaching certificates, one issued to Harriet Blanchard by Clermont County of the State of Ohio (1857); the other issued to Miss H. A. Wood by the Circleville Union School (1856). Also included, a reproduction of a steel engraving of Circleville Union School House, with "My Room" written near one window. [Acc. 75]

Temperance related material, 1885-88, n.d. Oversize Box 1

Handbills, newspapers, newspaper clippings, and other materials relating to temperance and prohibition. Handbills include notices of lectures by A. A. Hopkins, Prof. H. C. King, Prof. Chamberlain, the Honorable M. J. Fanning, Edward Increase Bosworth, John M. Atwater (A.B. 1863, A.M. 1866), Hon. John T. Moore (judge), Prof. Foster, Prof. Frost, and Col. Geo. W. Bain. Includes copies of a proposed bill for a vote to impose local prohibition, c. 1888, and the text of an address by Rev. Washington Gladden "The Temperance Problem in Ohio," delivered in Columbus, September 6, 1885. A newspaper, The People's Friend (vol. 1, no. 1-2), was printed in Oberlin prior to the 1885 election. Also of interest is a schedule for Oberlin volunteers at the Michigan Amendment Campaign, 1887; a song sheet "Songs for the Oberlin Volunteers" used at the campaign is filed in XII. World War II Ration Books, 1942-43

Ration books used in Oberlin by Donald M. Love, Gertrude F. Jacob, and Kate N. Daub (containing stamps), and ration disks used in Bay City, Michigan. Also includes U.S. government instructional leaflets, and a 1942 form letter used by Oberlin College to publicize the creation of a student labor force to assist local farmers. See also Mary F.
