Christine M. Johnston, 1928, 1930-33, n.d. [2006/011]

The bulk of these letters were written by James Bishop Blodgett, a student at the Harvard Medical School, and received by Christine Mitchell Johnston, A.B. 1934, (Mrs. Herbert E. Dobbs) while she was a student at Oberlin College. The letters begin in September 1932 and continue through June 1933. Other letters received by Johnston include those signed “Honey” (a friend?), notices from Oberlin College, and letters from other individuals.

Miss Elmina Lucke, 1931, 1946-49

"Unforgettable Memories: A Collection of Letters" by Miss Elmina Lucke, Oberlin College Class of 1912. (New Delhi: Northern Book Cenre, 1985). The first set of letters were written to Marjorie (niece) during Lucke's visit to India in 1931. The second part consists of letters to Marjorie that describe Lucke's visits to Lucknow, Madras, and Bombay, India.

Edith E. Husted, 1931-38

Edith E. Husted (A.B. 1915), a missionary teacher in Japan, sent these 16 letters (typescript copies), 1931-38, to friends in the United States. The letters are written mainly in Kobe (1931) and Nishinomiya (1932-38). After graduation, Miss Husted taught one year in South Dakota before going to Kobe in 1917 under appointment of the Woman's Board of Missions of the Interior. She taught in Japan until 1941 when she went to India to teach a Kodiakanal School of Missionary Children in South India, 1941-45. Miss Husted then returned to the United States. Later, she went to Shinonome Girls' School at Matsuyama and taught until her retirement. For additional Husted letters, see 30/85. Acc. 1983/26.

Samuel and Isabel Fei; Brooks Fei, 1948-50, 1953-54

One file consisting of letters written to Don and Mary Louise VanDyke, including nineteen letters from Samuel Fei (A.M. 1949) and Isabel Ying-chi Chao Fei (A.M. 1950), and three letters from Brooks Fei. The letters concern time spent in Oberlin during Sam Fei’s and Isabel Ying-chi Choa’s student days, 1948-50; Brooks Fei’s student days at Bowling Green, 1948-50; travel to Peking, China, 1950; Sam’s marriage to Isabel, 1950; and, family life, 1953-54. Bruce L. Bennett, 1972, 1975, 1994-96, 2002         *Restricted*

Correspondence of Bruce L. Bennett ’39 to Phil Jear, OAM (Oberlin Alumni Magazine) and the editors of the OAM concerning the Oberlin College Physical Education Department, the football program and Jack Scott.  Includes a letter from President Nancy Dye (1995) and the Alumni Magazine Staff (2002) RE: Bennett’s request to be removed from mailing list.

Russell Brown, 1989

Letter (copy) from Russell Brown (OC '35) to Charles Hillinger, May 1, 1989, in which Brown describes Oberlin College, especially during his days as a student. [1989/96]

“Letters not printed in the Nov. 31, 1989 issue of the Oberlin Review.”

One volume of photocopied letters (c. November 1989) which were sent to Oberlin College President S. Frederick Starr, the General Faculty Council, and the Board of Trustees requesting the removal of James Ross from the Board of Trustees, requesting that the charges against student protesters Claude Moeller and Dan Kiss be dropped, and calling Oberlin College to fully divest of its holdings in South Africa.

Dorothy Dosch Sands, 1999

Letter (typescript copy) from Dorothy Dosch Sands (O.C. ’42) to “Dear Oberlin Friends,” dated 3 August 1999, in which Sands describes Eleanor Roosevelt. Sands met Roosevelt in 1942 during the Roosevelt’s visit to Oberlin for the International Student Service Conference.
