The title page is missing, but this appears to be a copy
of T. H. Smead's A new collection of the most approved social
hymns: now in common use;
designed for
all social religious meetings (Cleveland: T. H. Smead, 1844)
The beginning of the hymnal contains "recommendations" and reviews,
including a piece written by Asa Mahan, President of Oberlin College, 1835-1850.

Black Laws passed in the Ohio Senate and House, January 30, 1849. Dr. Norton
S. Townsend, a trustee of Oberlin College, was an instrumental figure in efforts
