Series 4. Slides
Boxes 1-5
Lantern Slides (3x4); some hand-colored. Depicting people, places,
and events in China, ca. 1890-1935. (Box 5 contains the highlighted
slide series.)
Item list for box 5:
- Portrait of Lydia Lord Davis and Alice Moon
Williams seated with each of their children. c.1901-04 (3x4)
According to Carl Jacobson, the creation of this image
occurred soon after Davis and Williams had lost their husbands
in the Boxer Rebellion. It appears
that
the 3x4 slide is a copy of framed photograph, which Oberlin College Archives
does not hold. The hand-colored image has faded over time, and is in
fair overall condition. (neg. 3162)
- Lydia Lord Davis in Horse Cart. c.1890-96 (3x4)
Portrays Lydia Lord Davis in a Horse Cart with three children.
The latter cannot be identified. The slide is showing
signs of chemical degradation
and fading.
(neg. 3163)
- "Mrs. [Lydia Lord] Davis, her school girl's & native helpers... Presbyt.
School." c.1890-96 (3x4)
In this portrait of Lydia Lord Davis are unidentified men, women,
and children assistants. The image is in good condition. Lydia
wears a "Mother Hubbard" dress
-- a popular style of maternity dress in the United States in the
late nineteenth century (the sleeves on this one indicate 1890s.
Lydia was
pregnant in 1890,
1893, 1894, 1896, and 1897). (neg. 3161)
- "Yu Tao He Valley, Shansi." c.1924-26
(3x4)
A beautifully hand-colored image of the favorite summer
retreat of Shansi reps, pre-1937. While the image
of Yu Tao He Valley exists
in other formats,
this
rendition is unique. The slide is in excellent condition.
This stream
was destroyed by
the Japanese in the late 1930s. (neg. 3160)
- "Miss [Gertrude M.] Cheney Arriving on Peking Cart." c.1934-36
(3x4)
This hand-colored slide of Cheney atop a mule-drawn cart
piled high with luggage exemplifies a mode of Chinese transportation
during
the 1930s.
(neg. 3159)
- "Mr. and Mrs. [Paul L.] Corbin's Caravan Welcomed by Mrs. [Winifred}
Hemingway to Taiku 1905, Miss [Flora] H[e]ebner Behind." (3x4)
This beautifully hand-colored slide depicts the arrival
procession of the Corbins to Shansi. The visibility of
surrounding landscape,
Chinese
assistants, and
the popular fashions of 1905 make this slide interesting.
(neg. 3157)
- "Mr. [Hsiang-hsi] Kung in Policeman's Dress." c.1920s
(3x4)
Kung Hsiang-hsi is an Oberlin graduate who had been a student
in one of the mission schools in Taiku. He escaped to the
U.S. after
the Boxer
Rebellion,
but eventually
returned to Taiku in 1908 and founded Ming Hsien -- the
school built in the Flower Garden. (neg. 3158)
- "The Two Heroes of Cathay: Fay and Kung." c.1908-15
(3x4)
This formal portrait depicts a seated Fay and a standing
Kung. Fay Chi ho had been a fellow teacher and friend of
Kung's at the
Shansi
schools.
When many
of Fay's family and friends were martryed, he followed
Kung to the U.S. and attended
Oberlin College. Chemical deterioration and cracks in the
glass currently threaten this image. (neg. 3165)
- "Martyred Missionaries Graves, Taikuhsien." c.1902-1910
(3x4)
This richly hand-colored slide depicts the final resting
place of the missionaries killed in the Boxer Rebellion.
The slide remains
in excellent
condition. (neg.
3156)
