Created in the fall of 1994, the Oberlin College Archives website's main purpose is to make available finding guides, which describe our holdings, to the public at large. Researchers are thus able to review information about the materials available before visiting the Archives. In addition to providing finding guides, the Archives website is very concerned in listing contact information, serving as a promotional platform, and educating our audience regarding the role archives play in an organization. Other uses of the website not directly related to those above but nevertheless proven useful include posting exhibits and other examples of our holdings, providing records management policies to the various departments and organizations on campus, publishing resources which describe the records thematically, and serving as a news medium through which announcements can be made.
As of 24 January 2003, the Oberlin College Archives website consists of 3003 files, of which 2114 are HTML files. These files take up 54.5 MB of our account on the Oberlin College webserver <cobweb.cc.oberlin.edu>. According to recent statistics, the homepage of the website attracts an average of 21.2 hits per day from 51 different countries on six continents.
Previous versions of the Oberlin College Archives website are accessible from the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.
