For many years, three service flags hung
in Finney Chapel, commerating the military and civil service
of Oberlin College students in World War I. The special service
flag had 246 stars, each of which represented an Oberlin
student who left the college for military service. Each gold
star represented a student who died in the war. The flag was
originally unveiled in February 1918 at the annual Washington’s
Birthday Address and Reception. For more information on Oberlin
College’s role in World War I, please see the digital collection
Oberlin College and Military Service
