BIOGRAPHY
Smith Norton (1824-1912), a Congregational minister, was born at Madison, Maine, and received an Oberlin AB degree in 1855. He studied at Andover and Newton Theological Seminaries, 1855-57, but completed his divinity course at Oberlin and graduated from the Seminary in 1858. He was ordained at Lebanon, Ohio, in 1859 and then began a life of changing pastorates and home missionary stations whereby he never remained long in any one place. During the next 40 years he was at Granville, Illinois; Churchill, New York; in Michigan and Indiana; at East Concord, New Hampshire; Baraboo, Wisconsin; Evanston, Illinois (superintendent of a ladies college); Concord, New Hampshire; Harwich, Massachusetts; Bethlehem, New Hampshire; Pierre, South Dakota; Warner, New Hampshire; in Wisconsin; and at Shoreham and Newfane, Vermont. He lived in retirement in Oberlin, 1900-06 and at Albany, Oregon, 1906-11 before his death at Portland, Oregon. Norton was married three times: to Morilla E.
