SCOPE AND CONTENT
The papers consist of Dart's account of his life titled "Myself " (typescript, 45 pp.); his recollections of his parents (typescript, 6 pp.); his mother's autobiography (typescript, 9 pp.); Dart's diaries (1880, 1890, 1922-35); a sketch book (1867-68); notes and orders for pictures (1880-86); photographs of FHD and of a few of his paintings; interior and exterior photos of his studio and glass negatives (15) mainly of Oberlin views. The typescripts (copies), recount the great hardships Dart faced as a pioneer in Kansas and the many financial and other difficulties that befell his family. He writes of his painting and efforts for an education. His diaries contain brief accounts of his daily activities including study abroad in 1890. Included also are five primitive oil paintings by F.H. Dart documenting the landscape around Brecksville and Birmingham, Ohio.
 
PROVENANCE:These records were received from Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Dart, Claremont, California, in November, 1983, and from John and Kay Dart, Maui, Hawaii, in August, 1984.
