SCOPE AND CONTENT

This record group, consisting of four series, documents President Robert K. Carr's pre-presidential and post-presidential years. In addition, several talks, writings and speeches from his tenure as President of Oberlin College, 1960-70, are included.

This small collection contains President Carr's personal papers, which were received after his death in 1979. Categorized as pre-presidential, presidential and post-presidential years, included are correspondence, professional projects, professional teaching, and speeches, talks, and writings. Several files of photographs exist in this group as well.

This set of files was separated from the Presidential Papers of Robert K. Carr (group 2/9) in 1991.

SERIES DESCRIPTION

Series 1. Correspondence, 1944-1979, (2.7 lin. ft.)

This series is divided into four subseries: 1. Pre-Presidential Years, 1944-1959; 2. Presidential Years, 1960-1970; 3. Post-Presidential Years, 1970-1979; and 4. Family Papers.

Series 2. Professional Teaching & Service, 1931-1970, (0.5 lin ft.)

Records in this series relate to Carr's professorial career and special projects he was associated with. Examples of items in this series are lecture notes and research work for the President's Committee on Civil Rights. There is also a file of photographs and negatives in this series relating to English Civil Liberties.

Series 3. Speeches, Talks and Writings, 1940-1970, (1.9 lin. ft.)

This series documents Carr's speeches and writings. Series 3 is divided into three subseries: 1. Speeches, 2. Writings, and 3. Publishers. Carr's writings are articles ad notes for research work or books. The publisher's subseries contains correspondence and contracts with various publishers such as Holt, Rinehart, Co.

Series 4. Photographs, 1960-1969, (0.2 lin. ft.)

This last series contains a variety of black and white photographs of President and Mrs. Carr. Many are labeled.

PROVENANCE

The personal papers of President Robert Kenneth Carr were transferred to the Oberlin College Archives by Geoffrey Blodgett after the death of Robert Carr in 1979.
