Scheduling a K-12 or Public Tour

The Education Department at the Allen Memorial Art Museum offers guided and self-guided tours for student and adult groups.

We also offer numerous online resources that can help you prepare for your group's visit.

Guided Tours for K-12 Student Groups:

Interactive tours are led by the museum’s student docents and Education Department staff. All Educational tours utilize VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) which build critical thinking and visual literacy skills through close examination and discussion of original works of art. This technique focuses on students' own discoveries and interpretations of works of art, rather than the simple dissemination of dates and facts. Docents will help your students to explore, discover and enjoy art in the AMAM’s extensive collection. Working with small groups in the galleries, the docents encourage discussion about the art, artists and cultures represented in the collections and special exhibitions. In addition, each tour can be designed to complement your current unit or curriculum.

Guided tours meet and work within the Visual Art Academic Content Standards established by the State Board of Education of Ohio ("Historical, Cultural, and Social Contexts," "Creative Expression and Communication," "Analyzing and Responding," "Valuing the Arts/Aesthetic Expression," and "Connections, Relationships, and Applications.")

Guided Tours for Adult Groups:

Guided tours of collection highlights and special exhibitions for adult groups are led by docents and Education Department staff. Tours can focus on a special exhibition, a single collection area of your choice, or can incorporate highlights from the whole museum. We do ask that a minimum of 10 people be included in your tour group.

Self-Guided Groups:

Self-guided groups are welcome to visit and explore the museum at their own pace. Reservations are required, as we can accommodate a limited number of groups in the museum at one time. Self-guided school groups must bring at least one chaperone per eight students. Failure to bring enough adult chaperones or to follow the Museum Manners may result in your group being asked to leave the museum.

How to Schedule a Tour:

A minimum of two weeks advance notice is required to schedule a tour.
Due to staffing limitations, guided tours are offered only for groups of 10 or more. Groups with under 10 people can schedule a self-guided tour by contacting the Curator of Education..
Tours are usually 45 minutes to 1 hour long, depending on the age group.
There is no charge for tours.

Please note that tours that do not arrive within fifteen minutes of the scheduled start time may be subject to cancellation.

Schedule your visit by calling or emailing the Education Department at the Allen Memorial Art Museum.
Contact Jason Trimmer, Eric & Jane Nord Family Curator of Education, at 440-775-8671, or jason.trimmer@oberlin.edu

Before calling, please have the following information at hand:

  • Date and time you wish to visit
  • Name of your school or group

  • Number of adult chaperones who will attend— for adequate supervision, we require one adult be assigned to every ten children.
  • Name of contact person

  • Email address
  • Size of your group
This will help us plan for the number of docents needed to work with your group.
Large groups will be broken down into smaller groups of 12-15, with one docent each.

Unfortunately, at this time, no indoor facilities are available for meals.

Prior to your visit, please review the Museum Manners with your class or group. Thank you! We look forward to your visit!
