Continuing a tradition begun in the 1940s, nearly 100 Museum Friends gathered at the AMAM on December 17 for a fun evening of bidding, conversation, hors d'oeuvres and light desserts at the 2005 Purchase Party. The holiday atmosphere was enhanced by the music of an Oberlin Conservatory student string quartet. The party-goers' votes, combined with the 34 absentee ballots received, resulted in the purchase of four works for the collection: Keiji Shinohara's atmospheric color woodcut landscape, Anodyne (2003); a richly-glazed brown Chinese porcelanous stoneware vase from the 12th- or 13th-century; Mark Fox's fascinating lithograph By and By (2004), a three-dimensional work on paper that recalls a wire storm fence; and The Youth and Old Age of Woman (1895), a delicately-worked drypoint by Jan Toorop, a member of the Belgian exhibition society Les XX.
