The Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College is pleased to announce its first Teacher In-Service Workshop, scheduled for Tuesday, June 10, through Thursday, June 12, 2008.
PLEASE NOTE: The Teacher In-Service Workshop WILL take place, as planned, on Tuesday, June 10. The museum's closure will not effect the workshop in any way.
This workshop will take place at the museum, from 1pm – 5pm daily, and is open to regional educators of all grade levels and disciplines. During this three-day workshop, teachers will be introduced to the AMAM’s renowned collection of art, and will spend time in thoughtful, open-ended discussions about selected works as a way to stimulate ‘close-looking’ techniques. These are the same techniques used by museum educators and student docents and have been proven to facilitate the development of visual thinking skills.
AMAM education staff will also introduce you to resources available for your classroom use, including newly developed ‘Teacher Fact Sheets.’ These fact sheets will: provide you with important background information on selected works in the AMAM collection; suggest curricular links and lesson plan ideas in a variety of disciplines; and position their use within the Ohio Academic Content Standards.
Time will be provided during the session for participants to engage in a general discussion among the group to ‘brainstorm’ other ways the collection works could be incorporated into your classroom. Additionally, on the final day of the workshop, participants will be introduced to the unique Weltzheimer/Johnson House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Managed by the AMAM, the House is one of the few homes designed by Wright in his ‘Usonian’ style that is open to the public and school tours. A visit to the house can provide a fantastic supplement to your class visit to the museum and itself provides a number of opportunities to link with your curriculum.
Enrollment in the workshop will be open to fifteen (15) educators and is provided free of charge.
In lieu of continuing education credits, the AMAM will provide stipends of $100 to participants.
Funding for this workshop is made possible through a grant from the Ohio Arts Council, and the AMAM wishes to thank them for their support of our K-12 programming.
The deadline for workshop enrollment is Monday, June 2, 2008. Please complete and return the registration form by that date, or send your information to Jason Trimmer, Curator of Education, at jason.trimmer@oberlin.edu, by fax at (440) 775-6841, or by phone (440) 775-8671.
