Curator of European and American Art
Collections curators such as the Curator of European and American Art spearhead acquisitions for the collection, ensure that it is researched and properly cared for, teach in the Art Department, and collaborate with faculty and students to organize exhibitions and museum-based courses. The Curator holds a Ph.D. in Art History and has adjunct faculty status in the Art Department.

Today, the AMAM’s European and pre-1945 American art collection is one of the finest at any undergraduate academic institution in the U.S. Numbering more than 6,000 objects, the collection is especially strong in European painting from the 14th through early 20th centuries, 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting and Old Master prints, and 19th- and early-20th-century American landscape paintings. The collection also comprises key pieces of sculpture and decorative arts and a fine collection of coins, ceramics, and bronzes from the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean.

The AMAM’s collections of European and American art serve nearly all Oberlin College and Conservatory departments, including art, art history, biology, chemistry, comparative American studies, English, environmental studies, foreign languages and literatures, history, Latin American studies, politics, and religion. Classes regularly visit exhibitions in AMAM galleries and examine works not currently on view in the Wolfgang Stechow Print Study Room.
