Housing & Dining

Photo Gallery
Oberlin students choose from a variety of housing styles: traditional residence halls, program houses organized around language or cultural affinities, and co-op houses in which students share in the preparation of meals and running the household. Six different meal plans offer choices that range from traditional all-you-can-eat dining halls to a snack bar with freshly made sandwiches and salads, coffee, smoothies, and assorted groceries. Healthful and vegetarian foods cater to a variety of dietary preferences.

Close to a third of Oberlin students participate in intramural sports and club programs, which range from aikido to ice hockey. Everyone is encouraged to play, whether experienced or novice.

Student Union

Located in Wilder Hall and the Hales Annex, the student union is the campus “living room,” a gathering place for students, faculty, staff, and alumni. At the front desk, you can buy postage stamps, purchase school supplies, or pick up a copy of the New York Times. Downstairs are two eateries, the Rathskellar and the DeCafé and Market, plus the Dionysus Club (the ’Sco), where DJs spin music six nights a week. In the Hales Annex, you’ll find billiards, bowling, and the Cat in the Cream coffee house, a popular spot for students to perform.

Student Groups

Oberlin students tend to participate in more than one campus group or activity. There are more than 120 official student groups on campus, which actively engage in interests ranging from politics and the environment to swing dance and ultimate Frisbee. Student groups have their offices in Wilder Hall, where, on any given day, they set up banners and information tables inviting classmates to get involved.

Community Service

From organizing a campaign to protect the National Arctic Wildlife Refuge to helping at-risk local children learn to read, volunteer work helps Oberlin students make change happen. Service projects are not simply spare-time activities; they are an essential part of an Oberlin education. Oberlin students often initiate their own community-based learning projects, developing leadership skills and testing their ideas in the wider community.

Fun Things to Do

Oberlin students have the best of both worlds: the safety and congeniality of a small college town with access to the city of Cleveland less than an hour away. A town of 8,600 residents located 35 miles southwest of Cleveland, Oberlin is part of a major metropolitan area of more than 2.9 million people. Cleveland boasts world-class cultural institutions, major-league sports, unique ethnic neighborhoods, and great dining and nightlife. Students have access to such attractions as the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and much more.
