Oberlin encourages all students, regardless of their major, to broaden their liberal arts experience through study-abroad programs that provide cultural immersion, high academic standards, and intensive language programs (if appropriate). Each semester, about 150 Oberlin students participate in study away programs.
In addition to the nearly 80 programs affiliated with the College, Oberlin offers four of its own programs:
Danenberg Oberlin-in-London Program
Participants live and work with a small group of Oberlin and Grinnell College students as they take advantage of all that London offers. In the fall semester, courses are taught by members of the Oberlin and Grinnell faculty. In the spring, students take an interdisciplinary course taught by Oberlin faculty and a two-credit course on British history and culture taught by Grinnell faculty. All course work has a strong experiential component that involves students in the vibrant life of London and all of Great Britain. Each student normally earns 14 hours of academic credit.
Studies in Spain at the University of Córdoba
Students of Spanish language, literature, and culture may participate for fall, spring, or both semesters in the Programa de Estudios Hispánicos en Córdoba (PRESCHO). Córdoba, one-time capital of Roman Spain and seat of the Muslim Caliphate, offers a unique opportunity for study of the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian influences on Spanish culture. Courses are offered in literature, history, art, architecture, music, economics, and social and political reforms. PRESCHO is sponsored by a consortium of six colleges: Oberlin, Smith, Trinity, Wellesley, Wheaton, and Wooster.
Oberlin in Italy
This summer program is sponsored by Oberlin’s Conservatory of Music. Based in Arrezo, Italy, the month-long program includes intensive language study and the study of Italian culture, including art history, Italian opera history, literature, and studio art. For singers, instrumentalists, and liberal arts students, the program includes musical, vocal, and dramatic coaching; performances of a chamber opera and opera scenes; and other concerts. Auditions are required for performers.
Oberlin-in-Europe
The Euro Summer School is an intensive, seven-week multicultural program offered in partnership with the Center for European Studies at the University of Maastricht (the Netherlands), and the International Studies Center of the Wirtschaftsuniversitat (Vienna, Austria). The program provides a unique opportunity for Oberlin students to mix and study with students from across Europe while experiencing firsthand the life and business cultures of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Courses, which explore the economics, institutions, and business practices shaping Europe today, are taught in English and carry full Oberlin College credit.
