It houses the biology, chemistry, and physics departments and the neuroscience program. The 230,000-square-foot center encourages collaborative learning among a variety of natural science disciplines. The Adam J. Lewis Center for Environmental Studies has received wide acclaim as a model for ecologically sound buildings. This living laboratory produces its own energy, purifies and reuses non-potable wastewater on site, utilizes sustainable materials, and avoids the use of toxic materials.

Art Museum

The Allen Memorial Art Museum ranks among the top five college- or university-based museums in the nation. Begun in 1917, its collections comprise more than 14,000 objects, including works of international significance by Rembrandt, Rubens, Chardin, Monet, Cézanne, Turner, Picasso, DeKooning, and Oldenburg. Many classes—not just in art history, but English, religion, history, and other disciplines—benefit from this teaching collection, which illustrates the great themes of world art. The museum is a landmark Italian Renaissance-style building designed by Cass Gilbert. In 1977, Venturi, Scott, Brown and Associates designed a museum addition that is one of the earliest examples of postmodern architecture in the United States.

Performance Spaces

The performing arts at Oberlin utilize the Sophronia Brooks Hall Auditorium, which seats 500 for theater and opera productions, and Warner Center for the Performing Arts, used for theater and dance classes and productions. Finney Chapel is available for concerts, large lectures, and performances. It houses a magnificent, 4,014-pipe organ representing the best of the late-Romantic musical tradition. Pipe organs are also featured in the Warner Concert Hall and Fairchild Chapel. Conservatory of Music facilities also include the Kulas Recital Hall and 150 practice rooms.
