Blackboard is a password protected area of the Oberlin College
web environment. Some faculty choose to use this area to store documents,
conduct on-line discussions or even maintain course grades for their
students. The sites are available from anywhere in the world as
long as you have a password and an internet connection.
What is this new oncampus online environment and why should I log in?
Oberlin Oncampus will be the place to go to get information about what is happening on campus, but it will also provide access to web sites that have discussion boards, email lists, survey capability and more for both organizations and courses in which you may be involved. The creation of some sites and the enrollment of users into them will happen automatically. The automatically created sites include ones for most courses, student chartered orgs, academic departments and faculty committees. The membership in courses and academic departments will be kept up to date through integration with our BANNER system.
Personalizing the Oberlin web experience
Another important change is that logging in will also give you access to ObieMail (a separate log in is no longer needed).
Furthermore, many departments/divisions will be posting timely information through modules on the main page ("Home") and academic resources will be in one place on the My Courses tab. Organizations can be located on the My Community tab.
Optional modules are available through the Modify Content button found at the top right of the My Stuff tab. If you would like to suggest the creation of other modules, email octet.

To log in to the new system and access your courses or organizations, go to http://oncampus.oberlin.edu and log-in. Use your ObieID (email) and password to access the new system. If you have forgotten your password,
please contact the Help Desk (x58197).
Courses in Blackboard are set up to supplement the actual course.
Official College enrollment can only be done
through PRESTO. Organizations sites are created to supplement
Blackboard at Oberlin
Faculty have been using Blackboard since 1999 to extend the classroom
experience and increase interaction. Some examples of how Bb is
being used include:
- materials ( readings, images, sound and short video clips)
used in class are made available to students outside of class
24/7 and are accessible from any networked machine
- Music Ed has taken to posting videos of students teaching and
allowing the students to comment on them, view them and keep a
log throughout the semester of their progress. The videos and
comments can then become part of their portfolio.
- interactive study guides are created and made available for
students to assess their knowledge
- discussion boards are used to preface class discussions and/or
to extend in-class discussion
- quizzes taken outside of class have been used to free up valuable
class time for other activities
- the drop box has been used as a storage mechanism by students
and as a means of sending assignments to the instructor.
- email lists have been used extensively to keep in contact with
students and make announcement.
- information about lab procedures along with quizzes are made
available and are required for those taking a particular chemistry
lab. Thus, preparing the student for what they will be doing in
the lab and making the laboratory time more effective.
