Important Notice
REGARDING MASTECTOMY COVERAGE
As directed by U.S. Department of Labor, this notice is being sent to all Oberlin College Health Plan participants and beneficiaries in order to meet a notice requirement.
The Omnibus Appropriations Bill that was signed into law on October 21, 1998, amended ERISA and added a new section that requires group health plans' medical and surgical benefits for mastectomies to provide the following coverage to a plan participant/beneficiary who elects breast reconstruction in connection with such mastectomy:
· Reconstruction
of the breast on which the mastectomy has been performed,
· Surgery and reconstruction of the other breast to produce a
symmetrical appearance; and
· Prostheses and treatment of physical complications of all stages
of mastectomy, including lymphedemas.
The above benefits must be provided to any participant or beneficiary who received benefits for a mastectomy, and who elects breast reconstruction following the mastectomy in a manner determined in consultation with the attending physician and the patient.
The amendment shall apply with respect to plan years beginning on or after October 21, 1998.
All Oberlin College Health Plans are administered according to this law.
