Overview

Unlike most study-away programs, the Danenberg Oberlin-in-London Program offers students the opportunity to study abroad with professors from our own campus — and in one of the world’s most exciting, diverse locations! It thus combines the thrill of living in a pulsating international metropolis with the rigors of first-rate education. Curriculum makes intensive use of all that London has to offer. Classes are built to plunge into the city — much learning takes place outside the classroom. Courses are both disciplinary and interdisciplinary.

Moreover, the program offers an intimate intellectual environment. Each fall, one Oberlin professor takes along 20 students. They live and work alongside Grinnell-in-London, which consists of two faculty from Grinnell College’s home campus, several more London-based faculty, and 25-35 Grinnell students. Students from each college can take a range of courses with any of the faculty from both colleges. Internships in a wide variety of London settings are also on offer.

In the spring, two Oberlin faculty members take along 25 students, while Grinnell stays home. Students take two six credit courses: one offered by each faculty member in their discipline, and one joint interdisciplinary course. During both semesters, students are required to take a course on History of London.

Oberlin-in-London is a remote campus of Oberlin College. Students on the program are registered at Oberlin College, and their courses are Oberlin College courses. So there is no need to transfer credits or financial aid. Moreover, the Financial Aid Office adjusts aid packages to take account of those living costs — mainly housing — which are higher in London.

Oberlin’s London Program has profoundly changed many students’ and faculty members’ lives forever. Those of you who come along are in for a once-in-a lifetime treat.

London Location

The program maintains classrooms and an office in the Florida State University Centre in Bloomsbury, a central London district with a long history of intellectual and scholarly ferment. We are just a block from the British Museum. Our center also contains a library, lounge and internet facilities. Students live in small groups away from the Centre, usually in small apartments (“flats”) with kitchen facilities. In the fall Oberlin students can room with Grinnell students if they wish.

History and Program Committee

The program was instituted as a memorial to the late Emil Danenberg, eleventh president of Oberlin and a great friend to international education.

The members of the Oberlin-in-London program committee are Professors Marc Blecher (chair), David Cleeton, Phyllis Gorfain, Nick Jones, Albert Matlin, Steve Plank, Steve Wojtal, and Bob Young.
