The
Oberlin College Chemistry & Biochemistry
Department offers courses for undergraduates
who plan to major in the physical
and life sciences, as well as science
literacy
courses for those who plan other
majors in the College. The department
offers
majors in chemistry and biochemistry,
both approved by the American Chemical
Society. The courses for majors are
designed to emphasize the fundamental
principles of chemistry and their
application to observed phenomena,
to develop chemical
reasoning, to reflect chemistry's
interdisciplinary nature, to develop
experimental skills,
and to prepare students for success
in graduate or professional programs.
Oberlin is highly respected for the
number and quality of its graduates
who ultimately receive the Ph.D. in
the chemical sciences. The B.A. in
biochemistry or chemistry from Oberlin
has prepared our alums for a variety
of careers, including scientific research,
medicine, teaching, molecular biology,
environmental science, and materials
science to name just a few. We emphasize
hands-on chemistry, both in courses
and in ample opportunities for research
-- during the academic year, Winter
Term, or summer. And now in our new
building we have even better space
to educate and perform.
